How to block gambling sites and apps on Android
Step-by-step ways to block betting sites and casino apps on an Android phone: a gambling blocker, Play Store controls, filtering DNS, ads, bank blocks and self-exclusion.
When the urge to gamble hits, a betting app or casino site is usually only a few taps away. Blocking access does not fix everything, but it puts space between the urge and the bet, and that space is often enough for the moment to pass.
Below are the ways that actually work on an Android phone, from the strongest to the simplest. You can combine several of them.
1. Use a dedicated gambling blocker
The most complete option is an app built only for this job. KuSon is a self-exclusion app: you install it on your own phone, tap Lock all gambling, and choose how long the lock lasts.
While the lock is on, KuSon:
- closes gambling and betting sites in any browser, including private tabs;
- closes betting pages opened inside other apps, such as links in social media;
- sends gambling apps back to the home screen when you try to open them;
- clears gambling searches in the Play Store.
The list of gambling sites and apps is updated every week, and anything that slips through can be reported from the app. The lock is built for weak moments: an early unlock is only possible through a request in the app, with a 24-hour wait.
To work, KuSon needs Android's Accessibility permission (to see which app or site is open) and device admin (so it cannot be removed in a moment of weakness). What it sees stays on your phone. There is a 3-day free trial.
Tip: set the lock for a period you can commit to, such as 30 days, and extend it when it ends. Many people find a long lock easier than deciding again every day.
2. Turn on Play Store parental controls
Real-money gambling apps are rated for adults only. The Play Store lets you hide apps above a chosen age rating:
- Open the Play Store and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Settings, then Family, then Parental controls.
- Turn them on and create a PIN.
- Under Apps & games, choose a rating below the adult level.
Ask someone you trust to set the PIN for you. If you know the PIN, it is too easy to switch off.
3. Use a filtering DNS
Android can send all of your phone's web lookups through a filtering DNS service. Some services, such as NextDNS, let you block a gambling category.
- Create a profile with the service and enable its gambling block.
- On your phone, open Settings, then Network & internet (or Connections), then Private DNS.
- Choose Private DNS provider hostname and enter the address the service gives you.
DNS filtering is free or cheap, but it is easy to switch off and it does not stop gambling apps that are already installed. It works best together with a blocker.
4. See fewer gambling ads
Ads are one of the most common triggers. In your Google account, open My Ad Center, find the sensitive topics section, and choose to see fewer ads about gambling. Do the same in the ad settings of the social media apps you use.
5. Block gambling payments at your bank
Many banks let you block card payments to gambling companies, either in the banking app or by asking support. Some add a cooling-off period before the block can be removed. This protects you even on a device that has no blocker.
6. Exclude yourself from gambling operators
In many countries you can register with a national self-exclusion scheme that covers all licensed operators at once. You can also close your accounts and ask each operator to exclude you. Check your local gambling regulator to see what is available where you live.
What does not work well
- Just deleting the apps. They can be reinstalled in seconds.
- Browser-only blockers. They do not cover other browsers or links opened inside apps.
- Relying on willpower alone. Urges are strongest at night, after a loss, or when you are stressed. Plan for those moments in advance.
Blocking is one part of recovery
Blocking removes easy access, and that matters most in the first weeks. Talking to someone helps too. Free and confidential gambling help lines exist in most countries, and a trusted friend or family member can support you along the way.
